Let’s reclaim this land and grow wilderness
Let’s reclaim this land and grow wilderness
How it Works
- It’s simple! We purchase cheap farmland and plant native hardwood trees.
- Each tree will pull around 500 pounds of carbon out of the atmosphere and the new forest will protect the local watershed and create a habitat for wildlife.
- Thus far we have planted 900 oak and sycamore trees on 3 acres of a former cornfield in Hurlock, MD.
- Every $20 we raise allows us to purchase and reforest 100 square feet of unproductive, US farmland.
- Help us do this at a scale that will make a meaningful impact!
Our Vision
- Defensive measures that lessen our negative impact on the earth, like paper straws and canvas totes, are necessary but insufficient.
- To meet this existential threat, we need an offensive strategy to improve the environment.
- We are turning arid farmland into healthy forests, pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and placing it back in the ground.
- Help us do this at a scale that will make a meaningful impact.
The Case for Agricultural Reforestation
250 million acres of old-growth forest in the US have been destroyed by our modernizing society
- Much of these forests were razed to grow crops, but crop yields have grown tremendously with technological advances so farmland now goes unused.
- More than 40% of the US corn crop is converted into transportation fuel, an energy inefficient process.
- Surplus supply has also driven down prices, rendering many acres of farmland not profitable to farm.
- Replanting hardwood forests on this land will turn carbon from the air into trees in the ground, all while helping to mitigate flooding and prevent pesticides and fertilizer from slipping into the watershed.
